How Long Does a Roof Replacement Take?

"How long will this take?" is the first practical question every Dallas homeowner asks. For most single-family homes, the answer is one to two working days on site — but the full timeline from signature to final walkthrough has a few more beats.

Day one: tear-off and deck

The crew arrives early — roofing starts at dawn in Texas for a reason. First hour is protection: tarps over landscaping, plywood over AC condensers, magnetic rollers staged. Then the tear-off: every shingle, every nail, down to bare deck. This is the loud, messy phase, and on an average DFW home it is done by early afternoon.

With the deck exposed, we walk every square foot: re-nailing to current code schedules, marking damaged panels, and replacing bad decking at the per-sheet price in your estimate. You get photos of everything we replace.

Day one into day two: dry-in

Before anyone leaves on day one, the roof is dried in — ice-and-water shield in valleys and around penetrations, synthetic underlayment everywhere else, drip edge set. Even if weather forced a stop, your home is watertight overnight.

Day two: installation

Shingles (or panels, or tile) go on over the dried-in deck: starter courses, field installation, hip and ridge caps, pipe boots, flashing details, and ventilation. By late afternoon on day two, most DFW homes are finished — followed by the cleanup pass, the magnetic nail sweep, and the walkthrough with you.

What makes jobs take longer

  • Size and complexity: large roofs, steep pitches, multiple valleys and dormers add days.
  • Material: metal runs 3–5 days; tile and slate longer.
  • Deck surprises: extensive rot replacement adds time — another reason honest per-sheet pricing matters.
  • Weather: we do not install in rain or on wet decks. Spring in North Texas means occasional weather days; the dry-in means they are an inconvenience, not a leak.
  • Insurance supplements: on storm claims, scope approvals can pause scheduling — the timeline above starts once scope is agreed.

How to prepare

Move vehicles out of the driveway the night before. Take wall pictures down in rooms under the roofline — hammering vibrates. Keep pets inside. Cover anything in the attic you care about; tear-off dust gets everywhere up there. That is the whole list — we handle the rest.
